SATURDAY: Sketch Governors Island

SATURDAY: August 12, 2017

Governors' Island - 800 yards from Lower Manhatta

Governors Island, a 172 acre island in the heart of New York Harbor, is only 800 yards from Lower Manhattan, and even closer to Brooklyn. It is a world separate from the city with views every sketchers will love.

PART ONE:
The Late 1800's Frozen in Time for you to Sket

It's been said that you can't see NYC from Manhattan.  Governor's Island has absolutely unique views of the city and stunning views of NY Harbor.  It's also a snap-shot of small town American in the late 1800s and lots of fun to sketch.

Our morning Base Camp will be Colonel's Row, a particularly sketchable part of the island, with event's, nature areas, historic homes, rides and food concessions.  We'll meet there, have lunch there.

It’s CIVIL WAR WEEKEND:  Meet Union soldiers in the Soldier’s camp, watch musket and artillery firing demonstrations, and listen to Civil War music performances!

Artillery Demonstration and Small Arms Demonstration   They will be firing a real 1860s-era cannon and will demonstrate a variety of muskets soldiers would have used during that time period.  (Sounds pretty sketchable to me!)

PART TWO
After lunch we’ll sketch the NY Skyline - a short walk to the edge of the island.  Our spot will be the point closest to the Statue of Liberty.  We will sketch there and have our Show and Tell there.
