Today I was reading the Watercolor Artist magazine from June 2015 ( I know, I am way behind) and read through Marc Taro Holmes "Tea, Milk and Honey". One of my biggest Urban Sketching pitfalls is focusing on details and exact colors and not seeing or expressing the entire picture. This approach feels different because it really forced me to focus on shape and shadow.
I went for a walk along the Bronx River trail near my apartment and found a spot I been trying to get to all summer. First I did an overall sketch (yes in orange!) and splashed on some colors. I then went in thicker with color and then nearly dry brushed the last layer. I really like the result, and it looked much more of the outcome I was hoping for.
Too my suprise (and I see the post below) Marc Holmes has a class on Craftsy! I might have to take it too.
